The tourniquet, developed by Combat Medical Systems, is an additional element of the U.S. Army's Improved First Aid Kit (IFAK), which is issued separately from the IFAK, but is mandatory for use in combat.
This item is a hermetically wrapped, non-allergenic bandage three inches (7.62 cm) wide and four yards (3.64 m) long, the main feature of which is its increased hemostatic effect and antibacterial action, which is especially important when a soldier is injured in a hot climate. QuikClot is a comprehensive bleeding control and prevention product that uses innovative technologies for hemostasis, i.e. stopping bleeding.
The key component is a special inert mineral with tremendous stopping power. Combat Gauze is a soft white sterile rolled bandage impregnated with kaolin solution.
What is Kaolin (Kaolin)?
Kaolin is a natural earthy white inert mineral known for many years, mainly for its clotting properties. Blood clotting is activated much faster due to the immediate entry of kaolin into the blood, thus provoking a natural clotting cascade, leading to rapid coagulation. Kaolin has a non-protein structure and does NOT cause allergic reactions and burns.
Due to the fact that the bandage is folded accordion, it is always ready for use. It can be quickly inserted into the wound. Z-Folded bandage takes up less space, which is very important in conditions of limited space inside the IFAK pouches. Quikclot Combat Gauze Z-Fold has a blue stripe along the entire length, which is clearly visible under X-rays. It is needed for quick identification of the bandage inside the wound even after the bandage is completely soaked with blood.
Quikclot Combat Gauze is certified by the US government agencies - the US Army Institute of Field Medical Research. It is recommended for first aid.
